Research Fellow in Vocal Tract Acoustic Modelling
Applications are invited for a post that will investigate the acoustic
properties of models of Neanderthal vocal tract shape. Vocal tract
shape functions developed in partnership with a collaborating
institution will be used as input to existing vocal tract acoustic
modelling programmes to explore the range of sounds which might be
achievable by a Neanderthal.
The research constitutes one work package of a wider, European
Commission-funded, collaborative research project: Handtomouth, which
aims to develop a framework for understanding archaeological and fossil
evidence for the evolution of speech and manual dexterity. An important
part of the successful candidate’s role will involve communicating with
other partners within the Handtomouth consortium and with the wider
research community.
You should have, or expect to obtain, a PhD with experience in
speech production modelling, speech synthesis or acoustics and have an
interest in the application of engineering techniques to
cross-disciplinary projects.
The post is for a period of one year in the first instance. The
proposed start date for the post is 1st October 2007 or earlier by
agreement.
